After your arrival to Australia

Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN)

You need a TFN to lodge your Australian income tax return. You also need to provide your TFN to your employer for payroll reporting purposes as well as to your Australian financial institutions. If you don’t provide it, they will withhold tax (at 47%) from any payments made.

Please click here to apply for your TFN.

We recommend applying for your TFN once you have physically arrived in Australia. When completing the form you will need your passport, a postal address in Australia and contact details for either yourself or your preferred contact person.

When completing the form please ensure you ‘tick’ you are a ‘Resident’ for income tax purposes and ‘tick’ ‘YES’ to claiming the tax-free threshold (note: you can only claim the tax-free threshold from one employer at a time).

Should you have any questions when completing the form, please reach out to your Deloitte client service team.

Register for myGov

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) issues most correspondence via their online myGov system. As such, please ensure you can access your existing myGov account or click here to create a myGov account and link it to the ATO.

Please note that due to privacy restrictions, we are unable to create a myGov account on your behalf

From the end of the tax year

Gathering your tax return information

Shortly after the end of the Australian tax year (30 June), we will reach out to ask you to complete your About Me Questionnaire. Together with data we receive from your employer and the ATO, this online questionnaire will give us the information we need to prepare your Australian income tax return.

The About Me Questionnaire can be accessed via our GA Portal.

The sooner you submit your questionnaire, the sooner we can make a start on preparing your tax return. We'll let you know once it is ready for your review and approval, again via the GA Portal.

Appointment of Tax Agent Form – Return before 31 October

Please click here to access a copy of our Tax agent appointment and consent form, which we will use to add you to our tax return lodgement program and allows us to act on your behalf with the ATO. It may also extend your tax return filing deadline (potentially up to May of the following year).

Please complete, sign, and upload your completed form to your GA account (accessed at: www.GES.Deloitte.com) and let your Deloitte Australia client service team know once this has been done.

Please note the completed form needs to be uploaded before 31 October, otherwise your tax return will be overdue and late lodgement penalties and interest may apply.
